Aleister Crowley's numerology chart

Every student of the occult knows Aleister Crowley, no matter how much they love him or hate him, and usually both for the wrong reasons. Because of that, and also because his life was quite well documented, I thought it would be interesting to study his numerology chart.

ALEISTER CROWLEY
(Magician, writer, alpinist)
Full original name: EDWARD ALEXANDER CROWLEY
Born in 12.10.1875 ¤ Dead in 01.12.1947

Esoteric Number 46/10/1 challenge 2

The first position to be analyzed in the chart is a portrait of one’s intimate personality. Starting the analysis of the chart by the Esoteric Number one can approach the foundation of one’s personality at once. It will be easier to understand all other information in the chart after studying such position.

In terms of intimate relationships, it seems he was a very dominant yet melancholic person. Because of such combination, his seductive qualities were more in terms of persuasion than of explicit authoritarianism. A paternalist guy, albeit a rough one. His name reveals a certain taste for challenges related to that domination game, as well as his tendency to take risks as a way of self-affirmation: Crowley was known as an excellent alpinist, yet he didn’t care too much about training and preparing himself to climb as he should. It seems that he kind of wanted very much to climb and such will get him to face great mountains and actually succeed on climbing them, unlikely many of his expedition partners.

Exoteric Number 59/14/5 challenge 1

Crowley could not have another number to express his public persona but 14, a number of radical contradictions. It suggests someone with a “bad” reputation, regarded as strange due to a great dichotomy of personality, yet combining both respectable and eccentric traces. 14 is the “unbalanced” aspect of 5, that is, the one who finds balance through unbalance. Also the challenge emphasizes the difficulty of being respected by the society, for he always searched notoriety through Magick and arts, but happened to get famous as “the wickedest man in the world”, “the antichrist” and the like. Finally, 5 is a number of sexual magnetism, which is one of the most common associations regarding Crowley.

Synthesis 105/6 challenge 3

Crowley’s astrological sign was Libra, which is related to number 6. It confirms his taste for refined pleasures, his dandy side, as well as his emotional and passionate aspects. The challenge emphasizes the tendency to be misinterpreted: that challenge is exactly about the difficulty to speak his mind and make himself clear. That maybe explains why Crowley was so prolix, the needing to express himself. But the point about being misinterpreted is that Crowley expressed the concept of Magick as being any kind of ritual which objective was to get in touch with Adonai, the Holy Guardian Angel. He regarded any kind of practice which objective was not this one as black magic. Nevertheless, he was (and for many he still is) regarded as a black magician.

Number 6 also refers to his creative side: he was a great poet and writer, and also an artist (he had a naïf raving style of painting).

Path of destiny 1897/25/7

This is the path of the magician, of the one who isolates himself in his own world to understand the outer world. Number 25 represents the combination of sacred and profane in just one — the annihilation of Manichaeism.

The whole of Crowley’s path consisted in uniting God and Demon in only one, without any dichotomies or divisions whatsoever. People with number 7 as the mark of destiny can only find their real purpose in the world through books, studying, erudition, religion, metaphysics and this sort of things. Crowley was an expert in all that.

Choice 28/10/1 challenge 1

Here is the mark of the leader, as well as the dictator and the narcissist. However, 28 “justifies” number 1’s apparent authoritarianism, enhancing it with good intentions and motivation. Still, the challenge number 1 emphasizes the risk of getting trapped by the tricks of vanity.

2º. Choice 39/12/3 shadow 13/4

Beneath the spiritual leader was the artist and the teaser, a playful child. His hidden trace, his deeper and most troublesome aspect was the reality of death and transformation. Maybe his great purgation of this fear was to be the vehicle of a philosophy like Thelema, which one of the statements is “Death is the crown of all”.

Dharma 2002/4 . Karma 2060/8

The number of Dharma, which represents one’s mission on Earth, denotes, in Crowley’s case, the cosmic function of working for something, the mission of learning how to work under pressure and restriction. He actually dedicated his entire life to a very difficult task: the fight for freedom of expression and all the implications within may be nowadays easier for a pop star, but not for a so-called wizard in Victorian England.

Concerning the karma, I would say that I have found often the number 8 as the karma of people who happen to acquire some wealth (he inherited a good amount of money from an aunt).

Essence 4 . Balance 9

The essence number 4 confirms Crowley’s rigidity and discipline, which allowed him to succeed in complicated yoga techniques such as asana and pranayama. It can also underline a certain morality of his own — which he had fought against so much: he knew his education gave him sense of discipline yet also a huge repression against which he blindly reacted throughout his life.

His balance comes in the form of great restlessness, the need to be always active and looking for something different, original, dramatic. His activities taming the astral worlds and as hunter and alpinist are reflects of this necessity of balancing himself through motion.

Stress Number 40/4 Heart Number 5

This combination suggests that in critical moments Crowley used to orient himself through rational thought, rather than emotions and intuition. Anyway, number 5 indicates great adaptability, a person capable of quick mutations. His acts reflected this apparent incoherence, which logic lies in the fact that Crowley tried to practice neutrality in terms of not regarding anything as simply “good” or “bad”.

Foundation 5 . Power of Will 4

The apparent contradiction is here repeated. The way Crowley started his own projects was very changeable and unpredictable, but still he used to fulfill them all. 5 means the diversity of interests and 4 the talent to turn them to concrete results — his several books on different subjects and styles, the study of ancient languages, literature, the sports he enjoyed playing, etc.

The Formation of Personality

one: 3 / two: — / three: 3

four: 3 / five: 7 / six: 2

seven: 1 / eight:- / nine: 3

The absence of number 2 indicates difficulty to fit in a very close and monogamist relationship, which is confirmed by Crowley’s extensive list of lovers and Magick partners. There is again the mark of a strong ego, since there are three numbers 1 but no number 2 at all.

The other absence in the graphic is number 8, denoting a problematic deal with money. That was true, for despite the money he inherited, he managed to spend it all in publishing his books, producing several forms of rituals, traveling, drinking, etc., and in the end of his life he was penniless.

Number 5 is the strongest presence, thus reflecting his high libido as well as his taste for sports and traveling, that is, motion.

Self: 6 — Couple: 12 — Others: 4
An inflamed ego, he had great capacity for partnerships, yet specifically in the case of groups and friends. On the other hand, his generosity was quite limited: he once wrote that to facilitate things for a person would be equivalent to offend such person, since everyone is God, then everyone have the natural inherent talent to solve problems.

Creativity: 8 — Impulse: 7 — Will: 7

There is a great amount of creativeness in his personality. That, combined to a strong character and a firm will, surely made him an obstinate man.

Unconscious: 7 subconscious: 22

Both numbers show how impregnated his mind was by the propulsion to climb the hill of the soul.

Regression: 1853/17/8
One may call it past lives reminiscence or genetic code memory, but number 17 as Crowley’s regression suggests an existence as a very objective person, who used to deal with laws, ceremonies, rites, papers, documents and the like. This position, as every other in the chart, requires careful study of the numbers involved and their localization in the chart to make sense. By the way, Crowley affirmed he was the reincarnation of notorious occultist Eliphas Levi.

Tarot Cards: The Lovers & 10 Wands
The 6th Trump reflects the two paths: Eve and Lilith, the right and the wrong. Both would lead to the same result. This arcane is also a symbol of the pleasure of falling in love. It is indeed a romantic glyph. By its turn, 10 Wands is a symbol of spiritual blockage — which was doubtless the biggest challenge in his life, to establish spiritual concepts.

Heredity: 38/11

His family name carries all the weight of 11, the number of Magick. That also explains his parents’ fanaticism — 11 is kind of fanatic, the difference is how to manage such excess of emphasis in a proper way.

First challenge: 2 / Second challenge 2: 20/2
The Karmic challenge: 18/9

The numbers 2 and 18, both related to the Moon, mark Crowley’s awkward relationships with women. His relationship with his mother wasn't nice either; while in his adult life he was constantly messing around and allegedly treated women not as romantically as he would write about them in some of his poetry.

Life Periods:

I. destiny 25/7 . cycle 10/1 . pinnacle 22

(From O to 29 years old)

Number 22 marks an environment where too much is demanded, and that especially for the first years. Only strong-minded people can live through such a pressure. The ambient indoors was also rough, although 10 suggests something positive about the father (when he died, Crowley lost the only reasonable sample of a family. He was in his pre-teen years and was then raised by an uncle, whom the young Edward Alexander detested).

The ambient was not pleasant, but 25 means mental resistance and number 1 represents physical force. When he left the family to study in Cambridge, at his 20’s, he was finally free to deal with 22 in the best way, in other words, fulfilling his higher ambitions. He was still living this period when he wrote Liber AL, his most important work.

II. destiny 25/7 . cycle 12/3 . pinnacle 1887/24/6

(From 29 to 38 years old)

This period seems a bit confuse. After getting the annunciation of the New Era through channeling, he denied it. Crowley emphatically rejected Liber AL at first. However, even during such period he started to — perhaps unconsciously — promote the concept of Thelema and the New Aeon. That was a big sacrifice, not only of money, but also of his personal life, since he turned into an outcast. The persecution promoted by the press was intense. The number of the pinnacle can be interpreted as referring to his problematic affairs with women and men, but it surely also refers to the loss of his two daughters, Poupée and Lilith Jezebel Nuith. That was a period of intense suffering, as Crowley himself reported in his diaries.

III. destiny 25/7 . cycle 12/3 . pinnacle 1909/19/1

(from 38 to 47 years old)

That was an uneasy period, not as difficult as the previous, but even more controversial. Number 19 denotes great confront with leaders and powerful people. That may be connected to Crowley’s expulsion of Italy by Mussolini, after Raul Loveday passed away during a ritual at the Abbey of Thelema in Sicily. That is just a single example, since one will find confrontations against established powers throughout Crowley’s biography, and especially in this period.

IV. destiny 25/7 . cycle 12/3 . pinnacle 1885/22

(from 47 to 57 years old)

The external difficulties, mainly in the spiritual plane, are reflected in the course of 22. Nevertheless, there is great consecution in this same plane, due to the conjunction of 22 and 25. On the other hand, the tendency to some sort of sacrifice in personal issues was a long reality during the most of his adult life. In a sense, he was no longer the owner of his own life, for he decided to dedicate it to the aim of being the Antichrist (that is, his own concept of Anti-Christ) who would release people from religious ignorance. Still, Thelema is not against Jesus Christ at all. There are even some respectful dealing with Jesus as a myth, or deity, in Thelemic Initiations; the Antichrist then represents a threat only for the religions and people that betrayed and distorted Jesus' message: those are the ones who keep sacrificing Jesus, as much as Set sacrificed Osiris and had his son Horus (or Ra-Hoor-Khuit; or even the Antichrist, if you will) designated to avenge his father. However, Crowley had some material and social problems, but remained working to fulfill his mission just the same. Moreover, number 22 is probably an indicator of his troubles with heroin and alcohol addiction.

V. destiny 25/7 . cycle 21/3 . pinnacle 1885/22

(From 57 and forward)

The only difference between this period and the previous is the modification of the origin of 3 from 12 to 21. That made easier for him to deal with the pressures of Initiation and all his activities, for the perspective of 21 is more global then that of 12, which happens to be a restricted number.

Now let’s check some noticeable facts that are connectable to the indications in The Life Path:

· The EE conjunction when he was 4 years old suggests mistaken notions of moral and sexuality. A grand and dominant person (19/1, generally regarded as the father or some male authority) transmitted such vibrations to the young Edward. Still, that person could have been a very rough woman — as it was his mother’s case.

· Letter X in the emotional position around 1887 suggests anguish or suffering in family affairs. His father died during that period, and then Crowley was raised by an uncle (note the number 19/1). Crowley referred about this time of his life as “childhood in hell”.

· In 1898, when a conjunction of 16/7 and 12/3 was taking place, he went through initiation into the mystic and influent Golden Dawn. Note that number 16 carries some destructive vibrations — often as a “positive” and “natural” kind of destruction, like the demolition of an old house in order to clean the terrain and build a new construction. Letter L in the spiritual plane emphasizes a renovation in this period (it’s well-known that the Golden Dawn was the very basis whereupon Crowley built his system).

· Around 1899 and 1900 some members of the Golden Dawn firmly objected the unprecedented fast ascension of Crowley through the degrees of the order, for they regarded him a loony. They succeeded in blocking his passage to the degree of Adeptus Minor (note the conjunction of DD and 13/4, meaning impediment, obstacle, frustration, repression). But still, the leader of the Order, McGregor Mathers, used his authority to give Crowley initiation in the referred degree, provoking a division in the order. Note the conjunction 12/3 and 14/5.

· During the EE plus 15/6 and 17/8 conjunction he received Liber AL in Cairo. Crowley sustained that this message (Liber AL) was channeled by him, who was listening to Aiwass — the messenger of Horus, regarded by Crowley as his own Guardian Angel — who revealed Nuit’s message (Nuit is represented in the Tarot Trumps by number 17). Horus is a revengeful and passionate deity. The EE conjunction indicates a great change as well as a high level of sexuality and experimentation.

· When he was 32, during the conjunction 21/3, he started his own Order after leaving the Golden Dawn). This order, A.’.A.’., Argenteum Astrum, is based on the revelation of Thelema and of the New Aeon (as everything Crowley produced since then).

· In 1909, during the transit of 14/5 (which reflects a radical exercise of freedom) he published the secrets of the Golden Dawn, which eventually destroyed the order. In this year he also divorced from his wife, Rose Kelly.

· In 1912, during the transit of 21/3, 16/7 and 17/8, he was indicated as Outer Head (that is, the great leader) of O.T.O. to English-spoken countries, and later (1925) to the world.

· During the transit of 11 and 20/2 (the numbers of Nuit and of the New Aeon, respectively) he reaches the Magus degree in Argenteum Astrum.

· In April 1920, during the conjunction of 23/5 and 15/6 (a contradictory and explosive combination) he established the Abbey of Cefalu, in Sicily. In 1923 — conjunction of 24/6 and 19/1 — he was expelled from Italy.

· In 1925, another 21/3 conjunction (generally a “benefic” conjunction) marks a great step for the magician: Crowley took the function of Outer Head for the world.

· During the transit of D in the material column, between his 52 and 56 years old, specifically during his personal year 16/7, he was extradited from France, allegedly for collaborating with the Nazis.

· Between the age of 43 and 50, an RR conjunction suggests tension, instability and maybe accidents. Between 1936 and 1939, the DD conjunction indicates money restrictions.

· Between 64 and 68 years old, the EE conjunction indicates many activities, but also lack of confidence and anxiety. By the time, he had no money left, and his bankruptcy had obviously let him down.

· During the conjunction of 25/7 (his Path of Destiny, the glyph of the magus, related to Abrasax) this influent and curious character of modern occultism passed away. He died of bronchitis and heart complications.........................................
